Demountable pavilion crafted using recycled pallets

Eco conscious designers have been working hard to create installations and concepts with used crates and pallets to encourage recycling. Recycled Pallet Pavilion is a similar temporary installation by the Italian design firm Avatar Architettura. The company specializes in industrial designs and focuses on using recycled materials in their structures. Pallets, as we all know are the flat structures used to lift or transport loads. They are mostly crafted in wood which is not of the best quality and they are discarded soon after being used. The Recycled Pallet Pavilion is one such parallel concept that has practical uses too.

Recycled Pallet Pavilion

The pavilion resembles a huge bee-hive and covers an area of about 100 square meters. The whole structure is made up of diamond fashioned pallets held intact by custom made joints. It is completely covered with a continuous, transparent PVC membrane on the sides and an opaque membrane on the roof. It takes about 4 days to set up the structure and even lesser to dismantle it. The nature of its constitution and assemblage makes the structure easy to relocate in a short period of time. The structure is airy, appears elegant and for this reason suitable for open space events and exhibitions.

Avatar Architettura was founded in 2001 by Nicola Santini and Pier Paolo Taddei. The firm predominantly works on identification of design strategies that support ecosystem, biodiversity, recycled materials, etc. in urban living spaces. The pavilion is one such project that attempts to reclaim used wooden pallets for a practical objective.

The Pallet pavilion is presently exhibited in the garden of Villa Romana situated in the German Institute of Culture in Florence, Italy. It houses a 1.5 hectare garden and many exhibitions and events are organized here to promote fine and contemporary art. The institute is frequented by many international artists and designers throughout the year.
