Reusing and recycling is surely turning out well for the buildings industry as architects are goaded to become more creative when they try to build with novel materials. The uncommon design of this open coffee bar in Amsterdam is quite gripping. The structure dubbed as “Noorderparkbar” is built by Bureau SLA and Overtreders W. The traditional building method was reserved and a bottom up approach was adopted by the designers for this structure.
First, all the raw materials were sourced from about 100 different individual online traders in Netherlands. Then, the design of the building was fabricated on all the materials that could be garnered for building it. In fact, the designing and construction of the edifice actually happened simultaneously. In addition, a very interesting collection of odds and ends have been used to build the structure. This is probably what gives the edifice its unique bric-a-brac and restful look.
The skeleton of the building is primarily made from remains of a temporary hospital. The outdoor dining terrace was constructed from used frameworks while the shutters were built out of wood sourced from an abandoned factory. Also, wood remnants from renovation projects and lumber bits have been used in the cladding. The wood was fitted at random angles to occupy as much space as possible and the space left uncovered looks good as a part of the design. The exterior facade has been charred using the “shou sugi ban” technique from Japan.
However, the structure constructed from these salvaged objects, looks brand new and chic. It’s open and airy design, blends with its natural surroundings, and also adds tremendously to its eco friendly design concept. The wooden door open wide during the day giving people a full view and can be shut close after hours. The trendy structure with clobbered windows and arbitrary placement of wooden pieces has a well equipped bar and two restrooms. Sipping a cup of coffee in here will surely be a new and refreshing experience.
