Squish Studio is a real artists’ haven along the rugged Canadian shore

Created by Norwegian design studio Saunders Architecture for the Fogo Island Arts Corporation and the Shorefast Foundation, the Squish Studio is one of the six artists’ studios located in the Fogo Island region of Newfoundland, Canada. Built over a 130 square meter area, the Studio’s structure comprises of a white angular cabin with both its ends featuring sheltered triangular terraces. With painted wooden walls all around, the studio offers inhabitants a fabulous view out across the ocean with its north-facing deck while its entrance foyer located at the building’s southern face allows it to be flooded with light throughout the day.

Inside, a level floor surface is maintained by rising the southern end of the building up by twenty feet and thus negating the impact of the rocky ground beneath the studio and providing a dramatic visage to the building from afar. Located the eastern end of Fogo Island just outside the small town of Tilting, the Squish Studio features a trapezium-shaped compact plan inside. To deflect the stormy winds coming into the building from the North Atlantic, the studio was given a squished and low front.

Like most other such units in the area, the Squish Studio too is self-sustaining with adjacent hilltop being used to mount the stand-alone solar panels that provide power to the building, a wood burning stove in the small kitchenette and a composting toilet. Solar powered lighting illuminates the white painted spruce planks that line the interior and exterior of the studio at night which allow the space to appear much bigger and brighter than it really is.
