This amazing structure is a master thesis project by Kemo Usto, Thiru Manickam and Johan Kure at the Aalborg University in Denmark. Dubbed as “Favela Cloud,” this building project has been proposed for favela Santa Marta, and it draws on the social and organizational characteristics of favela itself. This novel and inhabitable design, which is very different from the standard buildings you come across, has been conceptualized for the future development of favela Santa Marta.
Blocks with a mesh like facade are floating in air and have been supported by metallic legs. Though it looks ghostly and eerie, this design is very practical and usable. The winding staircase that doesn’t stand straight is quite creepy. Despite its other worldly design, the convenient and adaptable system can assume numerous shapes and sizes depending on the conditions in its vicinity. The additive system is rooted on the logic of self organization and makes space even in clogged areas.
The concept actually takes off on the arrangement of the Brazilian cobogó brick. The structure will provide shading to the space beneath and will also serve as a public center. Cultural gathering can be carried out here. Activity hubs like a library, dance studio or media space can be built here. This futuristic and flexible architectural design can transform any space into a scenic attraction. The building is truly an intelligent and remarkable way to rehabilitate a slum area in any third world country.
