Cryoscope forecasts weather conditions by just a single touch

The Cryoscope concept designed by Robb Godshaw is a very intriguing technological device. Instead of using conventional means like visiting a weather website or turning on the news channel, this concept provides an efficient method for gauging the temperature of the day.

Cryoscope concept to touch and feel the weather forecast

The device is made up of aluminum crafted in the shape of a cube. The aluminum shell is infused with haptic technology for users to touch the cube’s contact surface for the temperature update. To see how the device works, we need to examine its internal components composed of a peltier thermal electric element, heat sink, cooling fan and a RGB LED. The peltier thermal electric element pumps heat in and out of the chaise. The combination of heat sink and cooling fan is responsible for displacing waste heat generated by the Peltier to prevent overheating. The underside RGB LED is a physical indicator of the cube’s current temperature, red for hot and blue for cold.

A cable links the cube to an external power supply and to an Arduino controller that enables it to retrieve the temperature from various sources over the Internet. Users just have to enter their location to a Web app and subsequently the cube emanates temperature for the day. It can also reveal the temperature for the next day.

In the neutral state, the cube’s temperature is usually 85°F (30°C), which is warmer than room temperature as the device has to compensate for the innate coolness of the aluminum metal. The neutral temperature acts as a baseline and the temperature of the cube increases or decreases depending on the temperature of the forecast. The Cryoscope is a concept presently and Godshaw might create a structural and functional device in the near future.
